The word know according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary means, to have (information of some kind) in your mind. According to the Oxford Dictionary, know means to have developed a relationship with someone through meeting and spending time with them; be familiar or friendly with.
Throughout the course of my time of experiencing social media, I have come to realize many people make statements about people whom they assume to know. For example: if a famous singer or rapper is being heckled about something he/she has done, many fans began to take a defensive stance for the individual as if they know them. I was a huge fan of the Female group T.L.C. when I was younger. I listened to all of their songs. I tried to dress like them. I had all of their posters. I watched all of their interviews. I watched every live performance they scheduled on television, and if it was a later showing I would record it and watch it later. I read every article about them in the magazines. I even snuck into a hotel and waited for them in the lobby so I could meet them when they had a concert in my home town. I met them and even talked to them. I went to their concerts. I drew pictures of the group in which they autographed them personally for me. What I am saying is, I was a “HUGE” T.L.C. fan. As much as I followed that group, I only knew them based upon the knowledge I had attained over the years. When their documentary came out on VH1, I was shocked and said, “Wow I didn’t ‘know’ they went through all of that.”
I started with that story to get to my point. Many of us know Christ, but yet we do not know Him. We go to church Sunday after Sunday. We listen to His music. We will even show up to an event if there is a preacher we like to hear attending the event, and get all excited about it. We will dress like a Christian. We will even read His word to see what He is talking about, or what saying we can adapt to use in order to sound like we may know Him. We will even follow some of the principles, but in the end, we only “know” Him based upon a knowledge which is in our minds. Matthew 7:22 says, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?”
Many people who fall in this category are great fans of God, just like I was a great fan of T.L.C, but I did not have a relationship with them. Matthew 7:23 says, “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” This scripture shows that many of us are doing things in the name of the Lord, but we do not know him intimately through a proper relationship. I dressed like T.L.C., and I even tried to act like them, but if I would have showed up at one of their homes, I would have been arrested for trespassing because as much as I would declare that I know them, they would call the cops on me and probably have me arrested because neither of them knows me personally.
Many of us have developed a “form” of Godliness based upon what we have seen and heard, but we have denied His power to change our lives because we do not have a relationship with Him. The Lord desires to know each and every one of us personally, and intimately. Casual followers cannot do great things for the Lord. Daniel 11:32b says, “…but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” Those of us who move away from knowing God with the lips and mind, and press towards knowing HIM with the whole heart, will see the manifestation of God in their lives.
We are all being challenged to know the Lord in a very special way. This special way will cause us to repent and turn from our sins. Matthew 3:2
Worship HIM in spirit and truth. John 4:27 (Worship is the key phase of knowing the Lord intimately because we are spending time with HIM.)
Obey HIM no matter what you have to suffer. Hebrews 5:8
Move from the place of being a fanatic of Christ, and become HIS friend. John 15:14-16
What we think we know about a person does not mean anything, if we have not spent time with them to learn what they like and dislike the most.
These are just a few steps to help us press closer to Christ. Those of us who are willing to know Christ by doing away with cognitive knowledge, and receiving a heart driven spiritual knowledge, will be strong in the Lord and the power of HIS might.
